It boasts blue skies, sandy beaches and Australia's longest single-drop waterfall. But its location — at the northern end of the state of Queensland — is a problem for me. Lured by the desire to explore Europe, I left for London 17 years ago, on a two-year working holiday visa. I had no idea that a handsome English stranger I met in a bar one evening would be my future husband. It's the reason that I am now a permanent resident of the United Kingdom, raising two young boys who speak with British accents and have no idea what Vegemite is.
