This fall, while touring my novel, Oil People , I was struck by an encounter with a student at Western University. After I'd spoken for 20 minutes about why oil fascinated me, she tentatively raised her hand. She was genuinely curious and engaged in my talk, yet she was still surprised: She'd never seen anyone so passionate about something that was, well, so gross. I laughed and told her that I appreciated her honesty. Admittedly, I was caught a little wrong-footed, not quite sure how best to respond. What I should have said was this: We need to rethink oil. Oil, as material substance, should be regarded more gently. We have much to gain from seeking to de-villainize petroleum, which was one of my goals in writing Oil People , a story about people living through the history and after-effects of 19th century oil production in Lambton County, Ont.
