Commissioners Peter Feldman and Douglas Dziak added they are seeking to better understand the two companies and “the enforcement challenges when firms with little or no US presence distribute consumer products through these platforms”. The letter calls for an investigation into the safety and compliance controls on both companies, as well as their relationships with third-party sellers and “any representations they make when products are imported”. Both Shein and Temu import products into the US under ‘de minimis' rules, which allows shipments valued under $800 to be imported to the country without tariffs. The letter cited an article in US publication The Information , which alleges both Shein and Temu are selling children's drawstring hoodies, which pose a strangulation risk according to industry regulators.
