The German semiconductor maker has developed the world's first 300 mm power GaN wafer technology. GaN is widely used instead of silicon in chip manufacture, as GaN chips are more efficient due to their smaller size, lighter weight, and lower overall cost. “The technological breakthrough will be an industry game-changer and enable us to unlock the full potential of gallium nitride,” said CEO Jochen Hanebeck, adding that the company “is mastering” all three relevant materials, including silicon, silicon carbide and gallium nitride. Infineon said it will further scale GaN capacity aligned with market needs. The company estimates that the growing GaN market would reach several billion US-Dollars by the end of the decade. Last year, Infineon bought GaN Systems for $830 million in an all cash deal. Infineon said it will present the first 300 mm GaN wafers to the public at the electronica trade show in November in Munich.
