I have spent the last few weeks exploring Miami's handful of Chinese-food inflected streets and the foods that they offer. The Chinese immigrated to the States in two major waves, one in the 1880s when they primarily went to the West Coast to mine for gold and work on the railroad. Another wave came in the following century because of famine and political oppression back home and opportunity—particularly in the garment industry—that could be found in the U.S. Phone calls to inquire about the size of the community and its food traditions to several Miami Asian-American organizations were not returned. The Chinese community started to settle in Miami after many fled Cuba in 1959. It was also an area that offered affordable housing. I stumbled onto the community by accident trying to get plates at the DMV. Main Street The principal street of Miami's Chinatown is NE 167 th Street.
