Shares in British Airways owner IAG are a rather rare find. Despite the price surging more than 50pc in the year to date they still trade on an exceptionally low price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 5.7. Indeed, it is difficult to find many other FTSE 100 shares with mid-single-digit P/E ratios at present. Among those stocks that are dirt cheap, very few can match the company's upbeat long-term growth outlook. Of course, IAG's shares have not always generated high returns. Following this column's initial “buy” recommendation in February 2021 , they have proved to be exceptionally volatile at times. But having produced a 45pc rise since our original tip, thereby outperforming the FTSE 100 index by 26 percentage points, the stock is finally beginning to realise its full potential. The company's recently released third-quarter results showed a significant year-on-year improvement in financial performance. Total revenue rose by 7.9pc, due largely to growth in passenger revenue of 9.2pc.
