Por fuerza de sus ambiciosas metas ambientales, la UE se había propuesto hacer que las aerolíneas aumenten gradualmente el uso del denominado combustible de aviación sostenible (Sustainable Aviation Fuel, SAF). Sin embargo, las empresas se quejan de que el SAF no está disponible en forma generalizada y es demasiado caro, lo que perjudica la competitividad. "No tenemos suficiente SAF, y el SAF que tenemos es muy caro", dijo Luis Gallego, Director Ejecutivo del grupo IAG, que reúne a Iberia, British Airways y otras empresas, aunque hablaba en nombre de Airlines for Europe (A4E), un grupo de la industria que representa a 17 aerolíneas.
