As someone who has covered Silicon Valley for over 40 years and understands how it works and what makes it successful, I am often asked the real reason this region has become the epicenter of tech. Historically , its proximity to Stanford, UC Berkley, and Cal Tech, and their stellar engineering schools helped feed the major staffing needs of early tech companies like Shockley Semiconductor, Fairchild, Intel, and eventually Hewlett Packard, Apple, and many others. Interestingly, when you look at the broader history of tech, another region of the country was significant to tech growth. This area was the Boston area, where MIT and Harvard played a role in birthing DEC, Wang and many other tech companies around the same time Silicon Valley began to evolve as a major tech hub. However, historical evidence indicates that the Boston region experienced a significant decline in its technological momentum with the advent of the personal computer.
