Since taking the helm on October 1, Ishiba's approval rating has fallen almost as rapidly as the yen. A sliding yen, which boosts exports, is normally a reason for the Nikkei 225 Stock Average to celebrate. But sales by international funds suggests a very different dynamic. As of the third week of December, foreigners were net sellers of Japanese cash, stocks and futures since January 1 by more than $32 billion.
