This expiration is also the fourth-largest option total expiration on record – behind June 2024, December 2023, and March 2024. “This will unclench the gamma and the market will be able to move more freely (either to the upside or downside) after today,” said Scott Rubner, managing director for global markets and tactical specialist at Goldman Sachs, in a note. Today's morning expiry ($2.8T) encompasses $2.6T from S&P 500 Index ( SPX ) funds, and $170B from non-S&P 500 Index funds. Today's afternoon/close expiry ($1.7T) encompasses $250B from S&P 500 ETF Trust ( SPY ); $435B from S&P 500 Index ( SPX ); $285B from non-S&P 500 Index funds; and $605B from single stocks. Rubner explained that the S&P index gamma is negative, and the long gamma position has declined by -$6.08B in the last two days, which is the largest decline since 2019, according to Goldman Sachs' dataset.
