U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he is imposing 25-per-cent tariffs on all automobiles made outside of the United States, including those made in Canada, to take effect on April 2. The tariffs, which Mr. Trump said would affect cars and light trucks, are part of his protectionist trade policy, which aims to spur domestic manufacturing and persuade foreign companies, especially automakers, to shift production to the U.S. “We start off with a 2.5-per-cent base, which is what we’re at, and go to 25 per cent,” Mr. Trump said at an event in the Oval Office.
