According to data from car shopping site Edmunds.com, January through October shows that the car segment of the market has dropped to 19%, the lowest level that Edmunds has on record. The SUV market share soared to 58%, the highest level that Edmunds has on record. Pickups make up 18% and vans 5%. While the average transaction price for any new vehicle remains high, at $47,337 year-to-date, nearly $20,000 higher than the industry average in the same time frame 20 years ago, passenger cars average a lower transaction price than larger vehicles such as SUVs and pickups — if only more people wanted them. "As passenger vehicles lose further popularity and drop to their lowest share of sales we've ever seen, automakers continue to bolster their SUV lineups to meet consumers with vehicle types they prefer," said Jessica Caldwell, Edmunds' head of insights.
