While it's most common among older adults , it can affect individuals of all ages, races and genders. According to the American Cancer Society, rates of colon or rectal cancer have been increasing in people under age 55 since the mid-1990s, inching up by 1 to 2% each year. Colorectal cancer screening can feel invasive to some people, but technology is starting to catch up. Earlier this year, the US Food and Drug Administration approved a blood test for colorectal cancer , giving people a new, less invasive option for cancer screening. While it's still given at a doctor's office, Guardant Health, maker of the Shield blood test, announced that it's covered by Medicare, which will widen access to earlier detection and treatment of cancer to even more people.
