US Existing Home Sales Rise At Fastest Pace Since March [Barron's]

Existing home sales were up 4.8 percent from October to November, reaching a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.15 million, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) said. "More buyers have entered the market as the economy continues to add jobs, housing inventory grows compared to a year ago, and consumers get used to a new normal of mortgage rates between six percent and seven percent," NAR chief economist Lawrence Yun said in a statement. The popular 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.6 percent as of December 12, according to Freddie Mac, but was slightly higher in November. From a year ago, home sales grew by 6.1 percent, the association said, adding that this was the biggest year-on-year gain since June 2021. The property market has taken a hit since the Federal Reserve, in a bid to curb surging inflation, rapidly increased its benchmark lending rate, creating a corresponding spike in mortgage costs.
