The National Union of Banks, Insurance Companies, Financial Institutions, Retailers, and Gas Stations (Synabef) put out a statement Wednesday asking for the release of three of its members and better working conditions. The Sahel country has been under military rule since quickfire coups in 2020 and 2021 and has been mired in a serious security crisis since 2012. The statement called for a 72-hour strike, to begin Thursday, and said the movement could be renewed for another 5 days if its demands were not satisfied. "For the time being, negotiations are at a standstill. The ministry of labour has set up a mediation board. After three days of discussions, we parted ways acknowledging that negotiations had failed," Synabef deputy secretary general Abdoulaye Keita told AFP. An advisor for Labour Minister Fassoun Coulibaly, however, told AFP on condition of anonymity that negotiations were ongoing, and that an agreement would be reached in the next few days.
