The board of FirstRand Limited JSE:FSR ) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ZAR2.15 on the 14th of October, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. The payment will take the dividend yield to 5.1%, which is in line with the average for the industry. FirstRand's Dividend Forecasted To Be Well Covered By Earnings We like to see a healthy dividend yield, but that is only helpful to us if the payment can continue. FirstRand has established itself as a dividend paying company with over 10 years history of distributing earnings to shareholders. Past distributions do not necessarily guarantee future ones, but FirstRand's payout ratio of 61% is a good sign as this means that earnings decently cover dividends. Looking forward, EPS is forecast to rise by 41.6% over the next 3 years. Analysts estimate the future payout ratio will be 58% over the same time period, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
