ISC Archives/CQ-Roll Call Group via Getty Images Fred Lorenzen, one of NASCAR's greatest drivers at the dawn of the superspeedway era of the late 1950s and mid-1960s, passed away on Wednesday, December 18. He was 89 years old. After battling Dementia in his later years, his passing was confirmed by his family. Lorenzen excelled at the “Big Money” races of that era and was among the best at adapting to the big, high-banked superspeedways, beginning with the opening of the 2.5-mile, high-banked Daytona International Speedway. That earned him the nicknames, “Fast Freddie” “Fearless Freddie” and the “Elmhurst Express” during his career because he was from Elmhurst, Illinois – a western suburb of Chicago. He had the looks of a movie star and with his blonde hair, he was also known as “The Golden Boy.” Lorenzen's racing career began on the short tracks around Chicago. He also raced at Soldier Field when the famed stadium had a race track around the field in the 1950s. Lorenze Show less Read more
