Talkspace’s Founder On Fighting The Stigma Around Mental Health To Raise $110 Million Raising money for a mental health startup might be even more difficult than you would imagine. “It’s really, really hard to raise money because of the stigma,” said Roni Frank, the cofounder of Talkspace, at Forbes’ 30 Summit in Detroit on Monday. “These aren’t sexy topics. They want to talk about the next Twitter or Instagram.” The company, which offers a text-based therapy service, has still gone on to raise $110 million from investors like Qumra Capital, Norwest Venture Partners, Spark Capital and Lerer Hippeau. In some cases, Frank said, investors had friends or family members who had struggled with mental health issues and tended to be more receptive. It certainly hits close to home for Frank.
