Ports are among the real assets seeing growing demand. Getty Images Advisors and investors looking for stability and returns might want to consider an often-overlooked category: real assets, which take the form of real estate, utilities, infrastructure and resource holdings. “It’s a unique investment type with characteristics that are valuable to a portfolio in any environment,” says Christine Tan, portfolio manager with Sun Life Global Investments in Toronto, who sits on the firm’s asset allocation committee. Exposure to real assets can be particularly beneficial in the current economic climate, she adds. Inflation protection is one advantage. Commodities such as gold or properties that generate rental income tend to rise in value with increasing costs over time. Even infrastructure assets such as toll roads have the ability to raise prices, Ms. Tan says.
