Despite overall dairy aisle prices rising 5.1% for the 52 weeks ending January 26, unit sales grew 2.6%, reports Circana, a Chicago-based market research firm. Operators are in the enviable position of merchandising products that are staples for the many shoppers who will keeping purchasing selections regardless of cost, said Melissa Altobelli, Circana senior vice president, dairy and bakery practice leader. Steady or rising unit sales are occurring across the sector. Sales for yogurt were up 6.1% despite a 3.2% price increase; butter/margines/and spreads had sales and price increases of 1.3% and 4.2%, respectively; and milk, the largest dairy category, had just a 0.1% sales decline despite a 2.2% price rise. The egg sector was the most dramatic, with unit sales increasing 4.2% despite an average price of $5.08, a 25.5% increase from the year-earlier period. Many stores are limiting egg purchases because of product shortages resulting in large part from the avian influenza. “
