The company's tech leadership gives it a "substantial competitive advantage" in credit cards, one of banking's most profitable segments, analyst Keith Horowitz wrote in a note to clients. The company's ROTCE, currently in the mid-teens, "in our view understates the underlying profitability of the business model due to its current high run rate of tech investment," the analyst said. The catalyst to counter its current valuation discounts may be its pending acquisition of Discover Financial Services ( DFS ). The deal "has some very compelling strategic merits in terms of marrying a payment network with a top-tier card issuer with leading edge technology," Horowitz said. While the acquisition is estimated to be ~15% dilutive to tangible book value, he sees the ROTCE outlook improving to the 19%-20% range vs. the prior mid-teens pace, "which should lead to a higher multiple."
