Total sales decreased 2.6% to $771.9 million during the quarter that ended on August 3 and comparable sales decreased by 1.4%. The Columbus, Ohio-based company said it saw sustained pressure on challenged categories such as dress and seasonal in the quarter, which were only partially mitigated through providing a greater selection of athletic and athleisure brands in the assortment. "Our strategy successfully supported a solid start to the back-to-school season, particularly in our kids' category, which helped us to exit the second quarter in a stronger position than we started," highlighted CEO Doug Howe. Designer Brands' ( DBI ) gross margin rate was 32.8%, compared to 34.5% last year. Adjusted diluted EPS of $0.29 vs. $0.53 consensus and $0.59 a year ago. On the balance sheet, Designer Brands ( DBI ) ended the quarter with a cash position of $38.8 million, compared to $46.2 million at the end of the same period last year. The company had $155.1 million available for borrowings
