The Dow closed lower by 2,997 points, or 12.93%, and tumbled to 20,188.52, the lowest level since May 2017. This was the biggest percentage decline for the index since the stock market crash of 1987, and its largest point decline on record. Each of the S&P 500 and Nasdaq also posted steep losses, falling 11.98% and 12.32%, respectively, at the end of another heavy day of selling on Wall Street. The Nasdaq’s percentage decline was the worst on record, back to its inception in 1971. Earlier, the S&P 500 opened more than 8% lower Monday morning, immediately triggering a 15-minute trading halt launched when an index fall more than 7% from the prior session’s close.
