Economists had predicted measures to reduce inflation would lead to an economic slowdown, but that hasn't been the case, especially in Arizona, said Jared Bernstein, chair of the President's Council of Economic Advisers. At less than 3.5%, Arizona's unemployment rate is lower than the national average, and the price of gas has fallen to $3.74 a gallon, about 75 cents less than a year ago, Bernstein said. On Thursday, the year-over-year increase in the personal consumption expenditures price index eased to 2.1% in September, a Commerce Department report showed. That is down from 2.3% in August and on target for the Federal Reserve's inflation goal of 2%. "One interpretation of that is it means inflation is generally back to where it was pre-pandemic," Bernstein told The Arizona Republic.
