With similar summer seasonality, the index also increased 1.0% M/M in seasonally adjusted terms in August. Shipments declined by 1.9% year-over-year in August, after a 1.1% drop in July. Those declines were the smallest in 18 months as goods demand continues to grow slowly, and slowing capacity additions reduce the pressure on for-hire shipments. The rates embedded in the two components of the Cass Freight Index declined 7.2% year-over-year in August, after a 5.2% drop in July. On a month-over-month basis, Cass Inferred Freight Rates fell 3.0%, reaching a new cycle low with the help of falling diesel prices. The Cass Freight Index represents monthly levels of shipment activity, in terms of volume of shipments and expenditures for freight shipments in North America.
