The Norwegian had angered two opposing sets of investors: those who wanted BP to stick to its 2020 commitment to move away from fossil fuels, and others who wanted a tougher focus on profits from oil and gas. Both sides have criticised Mr Lund, who led the company's ill-fated 2020 attempts to shift to green energies and then oversaw the reversal of that policy in February. The result means Mr Lund survives in office for his seventh and final year but also leaves him severely weakened, with nearly a quarter of voting shareholders having lost confidence in him. Board members need 50pc of votes to be elected and typically achieve tallies of near 100pc. The rest of the board, including Murray Auchincloss, the chief executive, were re-elected with over 92pc of the votes. It follows pressure for wider change at the top of BP.
