The Treasury has borrowed £132.2bn so far this financial year , official figures show, which was £20.4bn more than expected by the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR). Borrowing in the first 11 months of the financial year is the third-highest total at this point since records began in 1993, according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). It is surpassed only by the borrowing during the Covid pandemic and in the immediate aftermath of the global financial crisis. Public borrowing has already surpassed the OBR's forecast for the entire financial year with one more month still to go in the annual figures. The OBR had expected borrowing across the entire financial year ending in March to be £127.5bn. Borrowing has surged as a result of lower-than-expected tax receipts and higher-than-expected spending, with the cost of social benefits overshooting forecasts by £1bn.
