Ottawa says it's holding off on plans to support workers and industries affected by tariffs until it figures out whether U.S. President Donald Trump will back down from the trade war he launched this week. Economists are warning Canada is likely headed toward an economic slowdown if tariffs remain in force, placing pressure on federal and provincial governments to help affected workers and businesses. However, Mr. Trump's propensity to change his mind on tariffs makes it unclear what support programs – if any – will be needed. Less than 48 hours after placing 25-per-cent tariffs on most goods coming from Canada and Mexico, Mr. Trump paused tariffs on automobiles for one month.
