Unless China has successfully stopped the fast spreading SARS-CoV-2, aka the new coronavirus, then it can wave goodbye its 2020 growth target of around 6%. In fact, it won’t even come close and everybody knows it. The task now is to keep infection rates down, or non-existent, for weeks on end if China is to save even half of the losses incurred in the first quarter. The base case scenario on China has changed for the worse, despite signs of light at the end of the tunnel there. Consider this: early last week, Barclays Capital put out a note estimating China’s GDP to end the year around 3.2%. Nomura Securities was pretty close to that number as well.
