(Bloomberg) — The yen weakened beyond 160 against the dollar, near levels that led authorities to intervene to support the currency in April, raising speculation they may act again. The Japanese currency fell 0.3% to 160.15 per greenback, edging closer to its weakest level since 1986, and extending losses this year to around 12%. The vast gap between interest rates in Japan and the US has kept pressure on the currency despite attempts to stem its slide. Article content The next big pain point may emerge from a readout on the Federal Reserve's favored US inflation gauge on Friday, which is key to the outlook for interest rates.
