Andrew Harnik/Getty Images Upside down Re “Trump’s sweeping new levies on U.S. trade partners threatens to fracture global systems of trade” (April 3): “Foreign leaders have stolen our jobs, foreign cheaters have ransacked our factories and foreign scavengers have torn apart our once-beautiful American dream.” What Donald Trump does not mention is that it was U.S. corporations that pushed for open borders and free trade, so they could shift production facilities to where labour was cheapest and still sell back home to the U.S. market. Foreign leaders didn’t “steal” those jobs as much as take advantage of opportunities that were being handed to them by the United States itself.
