The road to clean energy and decarbonization of our built environment has never been more relevant than it is today. The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), in collaboration with the Department of Energy, recently issued a Request for Information (RFI) to identify and test innovative clean energy and decarbonization technologies in federal buildings. This initiative comes at the same time the GSA is investing $30 million of Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) funds into enhancing federal building sustainability, with the goal of wider market adoption of clean energy innovations. Between the energy used to operate buildings and the embodied carbon from construction materials, the commercial and residential sector is responsible for 42% of global CO2 emissions and 31% of the annual U.S. greenhouse gas emissions .
