If You’re Reading This On Your Phone, Thank Today’s New Nobelists The 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded for the development of lithium-ion batteries to John Goodenough of the University of Texas at Austin, Stanley Whittingham of SUNY Binghamton, and Akira Yoshino of Asahi Kasei Corporation and Meijo University. The science Nobel Prizes are often viewed as an award for advances in fundamental sciences, like 2011 physics Prize for the observation of the accelerated expansion of the universe or the 2014 medicine Prize for the discovery of cells that constitute a positioning system in the brain. These awards are fascinating without a doubt, but they seem to have little to do with the day to day life of ordinary people. However, Alfred Nobel’s will did not mandate that abstract discoveries were what should be recognized, but rather he wanted awarded “prizes to those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind.” The 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry
