First, it comes at a time when polls suggest there is growing unity in support of Canada as the country is under threat from the U.S. President. It is even more peculiar coming from a man who led the Reform Party, which won exactly one seat east of Manitoba in the 1993 federal election, and didn’t even bother to run candidates in Quebec. He is not the best voice for Canadian unity. If I was a Westerner, I would be insulted by Mr. Manning’s assumption that only support for his specific views regarding “east-west pipelines … identity politics and climate change” can define the politics of the region.
