Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said on Wednesday that the central bank could face a "challenging scenario" as it contends with President Donald Trump's tariffs. Powell said the duties on U.S. trading partners imposed by the White House are "significantly larger than anticipated," and that they are "highly likely" to lead to a temporary rise in inflation. "We may find ourselves in the challenging scenario in which our dual-mandate goals are in tension," Powell said in prepared remarks to the Economic Club of Chicago. "If that were to occur, we would consider how far the economy is from each goal, and the potentially different time horizons over which those respective gaps would be anticipated to close.
