Public libraries may be physically shuttered across the country right now, but the incredible value delivered by library systems will become more obvious than ever over the next weeks and months, with so many Canadians in quarantine, self-isolation or just staying close to home. According to the Canadian Encyclopedia, the first free tax-supported public libraries were established in Canada in 1883 in Saint John, Guelph and Toronto. There was a big boom in public libraries in the first two decades of the 2th century thanks to the Andrew Carnegie grants – and then again in the 196s and 197s. But the major expansion in recent decades has been in terms of online infrastructure rather than physical infrastructure – and most public libraries now offer access to a wealth of resources that includes not just e-books and audiobooks, but also apps, courses and streaming services.
