A tie-up will not fix America's chipmaking woes. "Real men have fabs," AMD cofounder Jerry Sanders once said. This was back in the late 1980s. The sexist comment needs updating, but his broader point is suddenly very relevant in 2024. Today, it would be better to say "real countries have fabs." A fab is a factory that manufactures semiconductors. These giant facilities require billions of dollars and several years to build. They are incredibly hard to run efficiently. Intel was the best at this for decades. Then, around 2018, its lead began to crumble, thanks to a series of missteps.
