With hurricane season upon us, residents in states like Florida and Louisiana are coming to grips with the realization private insurers have abandoned specific high-risk areas. It's tough to blame them. In early June, Moody's Analytics cited forecasts by The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) calling for 2024 to deliver an above-average hurricane season featuring 17 to 25 named storms with winds 39 mph or better. Of those, 8 to 13 should become hurricanes, with winds of at least 74 mph, and 4 to 7 major Category 3 to 5 hurricanes, with winds blasting away at minimums of 111 mph. Given private insurers' retreat, the hurricane season forecast slams home the notion homeowners are increasingly on their own and must prioritize forging resilient residential places. According to Dan Freed, AIA, LEED AP, principal and business unit director, U.S. East for global design, engineering and management consulting company Arcadis, the top priority should be flood protection.
